Introducing A Holmes & Son.

Client: A Holmes & Son

Sector: Food Retail

Project Overview

Holmes & Son already had a strong reputation in Coalville, but their website just hadn't kept up.

The existing site had been around for years and was showing its age. It was cramped, difficult to navigate and hadn't been designed with modern devices in mind. The team wanted something cleaner, easier to manage and much more representative of the business their customers already knew and trusted.

The project came about through a chance conversation with an old school friend who worked at the butchers. A couple of weeks later, I was standing in the butchers at 7am before work to talk through what their new website could look like.

Rather than trying to patch up what was already there, we started again.

The result is a completely rebuilt Squarespace website that keeps the traditional character of Holmes & Son while giving it the modern, responsive online presence it needed.

My Approach

This wasn't about turning Holmes & Son into something it isn't. They're an established local butcher with generations of history behind the business, so the new website needed to retain that familiar, traditional feel while being considerably easier for today's customers to use.

I built the design around their existing branding and colour palette, keeping everything consistent with the business customers already recognise. From there, the focus was on clear navigation, strong imagery, straightforward information and a responsive layout that works properly whether someone visits from a phone, tablet or computer.

There was no need to fill the site with complicated features or unnecessary effects. The brief was to make it simple, useful and easy to manage, so that's exactly what I did.

Since launch, the response has been brilliant. The team have told me how much happier they are with the new website, and their customers have commented positively on the change.

For me, that's what made this project particularly satisfying: taking a website that had clearly had its day and replacing it with something modern without losing the character of the business behind it.
